The research facility was designed by Liibeck architects Dannien, VoSgrag & Partner in accordance with the requirements of the EU eco-norm. It was erected directly adjacent to an officially listed farm building and, with its T-form ground plan and large, simple roof surfaces, forms a visual link to the open countryside. Together with the entrance, the main structure forms a shed which contains a laboratory, office and technical areas, a milk tank area, a milking parlour and treatment areas. Ten different wiring and piping systems have been integrated into the facility's floorplate. Open annexe wings contain two mirror-image stall areas with full-length box stalls, an exercise yard, a feeding yard and accessible feeding tables. In the two lines of stalls - the exercise yard and the feeding yard - hot dip galvanized steel plays the dominant role in the load-bearing structure and in the numerous stall equipment components such as partitions, separating grids, feeding troughs, selection gates and sliding installations.
