The Performance of DTN Routing Protocols: A Comparative Study

The delay tolerant networks (DTN), which form the mobile and wireless ad hoc networks, are characterized by intermittent connectivity, asymmetric flow, high error rate and long or variable delivery time, especially when the destination is not in the same area as the source. The purpose of this paper is to compare two categories (flooding strategy and forwarding strategy) based on two-pronged strategy, mainly the replication strategy that refers to the following protocols: Epidemic, Spray and Wait. The expedition strategy associated with the following protocols: Prophet and MaxProp. In addition, our contribution is based on a combination of routing protocols DTNs and the model of bundle layer end-to-end retransmission (BLER) to improve routing in DTN networks and operating nodes that allow the distribution of information between the shared network. This study is performed on our simulator programmed in java based on Opportunistic Network Environment simulator (ONE) in order to evaluate the performance of routing protocols DTN. The results of the evaluation show that the performance of different protocols can benefit from optimizing the performance of DTN in terms of the delivery probability, average latency and overhead rates.
