Statues of Queen Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt between 1503 and 1482 BCE, always show her with a beard. Gender didn't matter: the pharaoh always had a beard. Some 3500 years later, and speaking of her success in the male kingdom of science, Elizabeth Blackburn didn't sport a beard but she did tell a journalist 'I disguised myself as a man'.
