I had the opportunity last year to look at a large collection of books that had constituted the library of Michaelis Hallenstein and Co Pty Ltd. They operated an extensive tannery business in Footscray, not far from that obvious source of hides, the Angliss abattoir. On the evidence of the books and the laboratory notes that I saw, Michaelis Hallenstein had an active control and development laboratory.
