Safety in the spotlight

PROFESSIONAL competence, risk assessment, zero-harm initiatives and behavioural safety; more than 200 delegates came to Birmingham for the annual IIRSM (International Institute of Risk and Safety Management) and HSW conference to hear expert views and exchange ideas on the big issues of the day. But most also came to listen to the government's health and safety adviser Lord Young. And they would most likely have come even if they knew that within weeks the peer would have been forced to stand down (see page five). His report, Common Sense, Common Safety, is still sure to affect practitioners in the coming year, though he won't be there to see it through.
