A year of variety

THIS YEAR holds many changes for health and safety practitioners. The REACH proposals continue to loom over the management of hazardous substances, and are closer to becoming reality. Most of the amendments passed recently were in the direction of adding to the burden on industry. The offence of corporate manslaughter is well on its way through parliament and we are likely to have a new statute this year, with significant impact in the boardroom. EEF supports the principle of this law and the government's position that some key definitions and tests within the Bill should be rewritten, for example the definitions of senior management and management failure. We continue to call for a code of practice to help employers understand the intent of the legislation.
