OZONE is a gas and one of the most powerful naturally occurring oxidising agents known to man. The scientific notation for ozone is O_3, meaning that it consists of 3 oxygen molecules. In this state it is very unstable and will react readily with most things that it comes into contact with. It also dissolves easily in water where its sterilising properties can be used. Ozone is created naturally as a result of the reaction of pollution (mainly vehicle emissions) with sunlight. It can also be generated artificially using ultraviolet light or a high tension electrical spark (corona discharge). Naturally occurring ozone is a problem in most major cities where vehicle emissions are high and levels of ozone can reach unhealthy levels for extended periods during the year. Generated ozone is usually produced for a specific purpose. These applications are growing exponentially as its sterilising and deodorising capabilities are put to good use in a range of situations.
