World markets for textile machinery: part 1—yarn manufacture

2013 was another poor year for the international textile yarn machinery market following declines in shipments of most types of machinery in 2012. Shipments of short staple spindles rose. But shipments of long staple spindles, open-end rotors and double heater false-twist draw texturing machinery fell. Shipments of single heater false-twist draw texturing machinery, meanwhile, remained minimal after no shipments had been made in the previous year. Having said that, with the exception of single heater false-twist draw texturing machinery, the declines in shipments in 2012 followed two years of strong growth. As a result, shipments of short staple spindles, open-end rotors and double heater false-twist draw texturing machinery in 2013 remained higher than annual average shipments over the ten years to 2013. In spinning, shipments of short staple spindles were up by 10% following a 27% decline in 2012 and increases of 15% in 2011 and 73% in 2010. Shipments of open-end rotors were down by 2% following a 21% decline in 2012 but this came after a 27% increase in 2011 and a 212% surge in 2010. Shipments of long staple spindles, meanwhile, were down by 45% following increases of 29% in 2012 and 35% in 2011, and a hike of 163% in 2010. In draw texturing, shipments of double heater false-twist spindles declined by 30%) following a 13% fall in 2012. However, the fall in 2012 followed increases of 60% in 2011, 109%c in 2010 and 52% in 2009 and, as a result, shipments were still at their fourth highest level on record. In the case of single heater false-twist spindles, shipments remained small at 2,600 after no shipments had been made at all in 2012. A geographical breakdown shows that the primary reason for the poor showing of the international textile yarn machinery market as a whole in 2013 was a drop in shipments to the textile industry in China in the case of short staple spindles, long staple spindles, open-end rotors and double heater false-twist draw texturing spindles. There were also declines in shipments of these four types of machinery to the textile industry in Italy. On the other hand, there were increases in shipments of short staple spindles, open-end rotors and double heater false-twist draw texturing spindles to the textile industries in Spain and Vietnam, and increases in shipments of short staple spindles and open-end rotors to the textile industries in India, Indonesia, Turkey and the USA. Shipments to the textile industry in Egypt, meanwhile, rose in the case of short staple spindles and double heater false-twist draw texturing spindles.
