During the past several years, many dietetic meetings have included a session on metabolic syndrome. This has gone from a proposed disease, also know as syndrome X and insulin resistance syndrome, to an official one; and it now has its own IGD-9 diagnosis code. In January of 2005, there were 3948 listed citations of studies on metabolic syndrome involving humans. Recently, all of this certainty has been questioned. The American Diabetes Association along with the European Association for Study of Diabetes have issued a joint statement questioning the validity of the syndrome.
