An advanced, automated two step welding process allows fabrication crews at United Spiral Pipe LLC to produce high quality, large diameter, helical-submerged-arc-welded (SAVVH) spiral pipe at fast speeds for the oil and gas industry. A joint venture between US Steel, SEAH and POSCO, the pipe mill, located in Pittsburg, California, can produce 300 000 t of pipeline annually, using a process consisting of one forming line and three welding lines. The spiral pipe produced at the mill, using A252- through X80 grade steel with wall thicknesses from 0.25 to one inch, feature outside diameters ranging from 24 - 64 in.
