The US independent refiner declared on Sept. 6 that it will exit the refining sector by next July and shift its focus to its retail operations and logistics business. Sunoco has put its 178K-b/d Marcus Hook, PA and 335K-b/d Philadelphia, PA refineries up for sale but analysts are unsure if the company will be able to find buyers, as both plants only have the ability to process light sweet crude. In June of this year, Sunoco was forced to purchase 6.5MM bbl of super-premium Nigerian light sweet crude and 1.5MM bbl of ultra-light Norwegian crude for the Marcus Hook and Philadelphia plants. These crudes are some of the most expensive to purchase on the market and led to Sunoco paying almost the highest average price for crude of any refiner in the US. According to Bloomberg, Sunoco is the only company losing money-about $74MM-among 44 R&M firms worldwide with market value exceeding $1B in the last twelve months.
