Exxon Mobil isn't going to give up hopes of exporting gas from the Sakhalin-1 project on Russia's Pacific Shelf without a fight. The US supermajor is undertaking an independent study to see how much gas Gazprom actually needs to gasify Russia's Far East regions. Gazprom insists — publicly at least — that Sakhalin-1 is the only available source for the local gasification program and that all nonassociated and associated gas from the project is needed for this purpose — effectively short circuiting any attempts by Exxon to send gas to world markets. The problem from the perspective of Exxon and its partners is that local markets are both tiny and low paying.
