Exxon, Eni Closing on Mozambique Deal?

Are the stars finally aligning for Mozambique? The chief executives of Exxon Mobil and Eni met in Maputo last week with President Felipe Nyusi, the strongest sign yet that the US giant may be close to grabbing a share of Eni's deepwater gas discoveries. Eni and Exxon have been negotiating since last year and the Italian major is promising a final investment decision (FID) for Coral FLNG, Mozambique's first offshore gas development, by the end of 2016 — once the partnering arrangements are in place. FID for Coral FLNG, an estimated $5 billion investment delivering 3.4 million tons per year, will launch development of the estimated 200 trillion cubic feet of gas (5.66 trillion cubic meters) in Mozambique's deepwater Rovuma Basin, putting East Africa on the global gas map more than a decade after the first blockbuster discoveries. First cargoes are expected to ship post-2020, all presold to BP.
