After several years of decline, Spanish gas demand rose 6.5% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2015 to 8.7 Bern (93.4 TWh gas), according to Spanish gas grid and LNG terminal operator Enagas. But as in other major European markets, the first-quarter increase seems to be based more on the fact the weather was much colder early this year compared with January-March 2014 than on any fundamental demand uptick (WGI Apr.22' 15). Spanish gas demand in full-year 2014 dropped 9.6% to 27.9 Bern, according to industry association Eurogas, with consumption falling in all EU members (WGI Apr. 1' 15). Enagas' new figures for Spain are higher than estimates it made in late 2014, which it attributes to the cold winter weather. It said gas used in power generation shot up 31.4% in the first quarter, as hydropower and wind generation fell, following sharp declines over the past few years.
