US Gas Trading To See New Trading Rules

US natural gas traders and other energy market participants are facing new limits on the number of speculative contracts that can be held at any one time. As part of efforts to guard against energy price spikes and volatility, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Gary Gensler, an appointee of President Barack Obama, is aiming to crack down on speculative activity, as is Congress. Gensler says the commission is strongly considering placing position limits on "commodities of finite supply, such as crude oil, heating oil, natural gas, gasoline and other energy products."
