This technique can cut chemical use in apple orchards. COOPERATIVE studies in West Virginia and in four countries in Europe have revealed that when apple trees begin to bear, strips of rape, buckwheat, dill, and dwarf sorghum planted between the treerows can play a role in controlling orchard pests. "The data that we have collected so far clearly show that this is a viable system of pest management," says Mark Brown of the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). The study is in its fifth year. So far,the quality of the apple hasn't been affected by the new technique, Brown says.
