Thanet Earth received the Norah Stucken Award for Outstanding Horticultural Projects, for its contribution towards greater national self-sufficiency in home-grown salads, efficient use of energy and for raising the profile of successful glasshouse horticulture in the UK. Steve McVickers presents an overview of the project. Just 18 months ago cauliflowers covered a 95-hectare plot of land near Manston Airport in Thanet, East Kent. Recent years nave seen brassica growers become increasingly despairingof low returns and of the dubious economic viability of their crops. In a bold move and on a scale not seen before in the UK, our fresh produce company had ambitious plans for the site.
