Today, copper concentrate obtained in the flotation separation of converter matte (FSM concentrate) has the composition (in percent): 68.1 Cu, 4.57 Ni, 0.172 Co, 3.68 Fe, and 21.3 S and is processed at the NGMK [Noril'sk Metallurgical Plant] using the following flowsheet: reverberatory smelting to white matte-blowing in the Ilnd converting period to blister copper [1 ]. Because of a series of shortcomings (low specific furnace productivity, increased fuel consumption during smelting, additional numbers of crane operations in the shop) this technology cannot be accepted as satisfactory. Using the more efficient system promoted by the Severonikel' Combine [2] (drying the FSM concentrate in fluidized bed furnaces-smelting in vertical converters) will require considerable reconstruction of the smelting shop in the NGMK.
