In 1999, a curious veterinarian discovered a new virus in the United States. Tracey McNamara, DVM, DACVP, a pathologist at the Bronx Zoo in New York, found that rare birds in the zoo, as well as wild crows, were dying from a mysterious illness. Her tenacity in pursuing the cause of the illness led to the discover)' that West Nile virus (WNV) had entered the country. In less than a decade, WNV has traveled across the United States, infecting animals as well as people.
