A4-month-old, male golden retriever puppy presented with a complaint of 1-week history of head shaking and scratching at the left ear. The referring veterinarian had noted that the dog lacked an opening to the external ear canal and had referred the patient for further consultation and examination at our hospital. Physical examination confirmed there was no opening of the vertical ear canal but rather a small tissue indentation where the opening of the external ear canal should have been. Palpation suggested that normal-feeling cartilage existed in the area of the horizontal ear canal. During the physical examination, the dog occasionally would shake its head and scratch the left ear. The right ear showed no abnormalities, and no other significant findings were noted.
