Urban renewal

While urban road, and sometimes rail, tunnels are usually considered beneficial as a means of clearing congested surface areas and reducing exhaust pollution, they can also be incredibly effective in restoring the visual urban environment above them-particularly when they replace ugly elevated structures IN THIS issue of Tunnelling & Trenchless Construction we highlight a very specific case, in the long drawn out and extremely expensive Central Artery project in Boston, US. Expensive it may have been, but to residents and businesses close by the elevated section of Interstate 93, which the tunnels have replaced, the value of the project must be inestimable.
