The progress of section 2: 2001

THE contracts for the 38.5 km long Section 2 were let in January and February 2001, following the tender and assessment periods during 2000. The contractor joint ventures immediately moved into the CTRL office in Tottenham Court Road, in London, to work together with the RLE team in the detailed preliminary design, the planning and value engineering for up to six months before starting on site. This also led to co-operation between all contracts, the purchasing of system wide materials jointly, such as cast iron linings for the cross passages and openings in therunning tunnels and other tunnel materials. Following the signing of the contracts with the four tunnelling contractor joint ventures, negotiations were completed with the four TBM manufacturers for the delivery to site of the eight TBMs between April and August 2002 depending upon the individual contract.
