Global technology transfer

THE future of tunnelling and trenchless installation technologies does not just depend on research and innovation in any one country. Many of the techniques used in trenchless technology had their origins in Europe or Japan. Horizontal directional drilling on the other hand was a US-developed technique that has rapidly been exported to countries around the world over the past decade. Both IBM tunnelling, including hard rock and soft ground systems, and trenchless techniques have been developed or adapted around the world depending on local need, local geological conditions and local market opportunities. Once developed, however, the techniques can be readily exported to areas that face the same or similar problems.
