CAPITOL COMMENTS: A GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE

Occasionally, one of the more vexing problems encountered in the business world is the law of unintended consequences. Individuals, companies or industries can lobby for new regulations or some form of government intervention to protect or defend against many perceived injustices. It is interesting that businesses historically cry for less government in their lives until their particular ox is being gored. Just this sort of thing has recently taken place in our industry with the advent of the Department of Commerce finally ruling on the charges of Chinese tire manufacturers "dumping" (selling products below their actual cost to capture a market) OTR tires into the United States. We have received a few calls about the impending anti-dumping tariffs about to be charged (several months down the road) on many of these Chinese OTR manufacturers, and that tells us there are many of you with questions about where this will lead and whether TIA will have a "position."
