The world currently experiences the development of so-called "smart coatings", new functionalities of coatings beyond the defining functions of aesthetics and the protection of the substrate. Many of the supplemental functionalities discussed center around enhanced hygiene and healthy environments, for example self cleaning surfaces, toxic air pollutants reducing coatings, dust and dirt repellent paints and, last but not least, antimicrobial surfaces.
