As part of the 50th anniversary of the launch of Ford's 6X series, T&M's featured stories relating to the range throughout the year, but we felt it was worth providing an insight of how the project reached production. David Woods worked as a training instructor at the time and takes up the story. On 7 March 1960 I started my 40-year career with Ford Tractor Division in the International Statistics and Market Research section of the Product Planning department at the huge Dagenham plant. It wasn't long before I heard the code word 6X being discussed by Bill Pollitt, Geoff Perry, Doug Blair and Dave Kenlay, who were the key players in the planning stage of a major new product line. Their job was to co-ordinate with UK Sales and Marketing, Product Engineering in the USA and UK to achieve timely introduction of new tractor models with specifications demanded by the markets.
