摘要

The current models of urban water systems, and their corresponding infrastructure, originated during the 19th century when populations were relatively small. Water was considered abundant and the environment benign. Today, cities worldwide are facinga range of dynamic regional and global pressures, such as climate change, population growth, urbanization, deterioration of urban infrastructure systems, and more. Due to these pressures, cities of the future will experience difficulties in efficiently managing scarcer and less reliable water resources. The traditional range of ad hoc responses, driven by incidents, to the problems arising from conventional urban water management will not be sufficient to cope with these predicted changes.
