This paper deals with the wear phenomenon of piston-rings of diesel engines. To begin with, the, paper identifies the major types of wear encountered in piston rings, and their dependence on mechanical, physcial and. material properties. In order to illustrate the importance of the role of material properties, a case history of piston ring failure is discussed. The mechanism of the wear in the illustrated example has been identified to be abrasive. The cause of abrasive wear has been attributed to the lower hardness of coatings, deposited on the piston ring to combat wear, and growth of iron owing to lower percentage of chromium in the chemical composition of iron.
