Board Producers (Again) Try for Price Increase

Last week a couple of integrated producers started telling their customers that effective with shipments on July 1 they will be increasing containerboard prices by $55 per ton. Georgia-Pacific Corp. (GP), Adanta, was the first to say it was going to try to raise prices after a price increase attempt earlier this year failed (see May 10 page 1 story in OBM). Within hours, Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (SSCC), Chicago, told its customers the same price increase details. SSCC is currently the top containerboard player, with about 20 percent market share.
