Equity markets in the United States went into a tailspin during the reporting period June 6-12, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling 256.14 points to 10,792.58, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index falling 28.89 points to 1,236.40. The declines wiped out all the gains the indexes had made since mid-November 2005. General weakness in the markets was bad for all the commodity producers, although the gold producers probably took worse punishment. AngloGold Ashanti was down 6.04 US dollars at 40.03 US dollars - a 10 percent loss - and Gold Fields fell 2.90 US dollars, or 14 percent, to 17.69 US dollars.
