MORE THAN 500 INDUSTRY guests came together to witness a showdown of Australian design excellence at the 2005 Australian Design Awards, Presented by Standards Australia and host of ABC TV's The New Inventors, James O'Loghlin, the event was held at the Melbourne Museum on Friday 22 April, with special guests including The Hon. Fran Bailey MP, Federal Minister for Small Business and Tourism, and The Hon. Lynrte Kosky MP, Victorian Minister for Education and Training. Of the 49 industry finalists, 20 cutting-edge designs were awarded a coveted Australian Design Award~R, including the Cox Stockman 2005 Lawn Tractor, the VLocity 160 DMU Diesel Train and the Samaritan PAD Portable Heart Defibrillator. No one was more "stoked" than 2005 Australian Design Award~R of the Year winner, Surf Hardware International - a collaboration of designers and surfers that refined the FCS H-2 Fin Control System to "absolute perfection", according to the esteemed judging panel. Wylie Fowler, Global Marketing and Product Development Manager of Surf Hardware International, captured the audience with an emotive acceptance speech detailing the passion and dedication behind this wholly Australian-owned company.
