National Metadata Project

The Spatial Information Council of Australia and New Zealand (ANZLIC) recently endorsed a national project to define a new ANZLIC metadata profile based on ISO 19115 Geographic information - Metadata (AS/NZS ISO 19115), and oversee the development of a metadata entry tool based on this new profile for the management of geographical information data. The project is expected to be completed by September 2005. Metadata is data about data; i.e. a description of a particular dataset. Metadata fields such as title, custodian, abstract, search words, spatial extent, currency of data, data set status (continual update), format e.g. ESRI, Maplnfo or DGN, and accuracy are key metadata fields. Metadata is an important mechanism that will enhance the knowledge of geospatial information and it supports enhanced data discovery.
