Ringtail in mice

During winter, when the relative humidity and temperature in a laboratory animal house were 25% and 16deg C, respectively, a colony of Swiss albino mice developed ringtail (twisting of the end of the tail, with annular constriction leading to oedema, necrosis, and loss of the distal portion); no other abnormalities were apparent in a 30-day observation period. The stock was discarded, and the condition did not recur when the relative humidity and temperature were raised to 50-55% and 20-30deg C, respectively.
