New technologies of satellite communication ground systems

The growth of large satellite communication networks requires new technologies for narrowband and broadband services. Satellite communication ground systems are currently a strong growth market, driven chiefly by major projects to deploy vast regional or worldwide networks. These major programmes are significantly more advanced than traditional Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) network systems, because the new market is no longer restricted to businesses and institutions, but is targeted at residential users as well. This move to address the mass market, already apparent in the field of direct satellite broadcasting systems, is becoming the norm in many types of networks that provide services ranging from basic paging to the most complex multimedia access (see Table 1).
