Manufacturing Expands

The U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of 5.9% in the fourth quarter 2009, according to revised estimates by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Initial estimates pegged growth at 5.7%, but a more moderate decline in inventories coupled with a stronger expansion in business investments pushed the rate up. Revised estimates have fixed invest- ments rising at an annualized rate of 6.5% in the fourth quarter, after dropping 5.9% in the third.
