Follow the test plan!

Before beginning a test, it is necessary to write a test plan. The test plan is a carefully thought-out road map of how the test is to be run. It includes lists of the required hardware, test equipment, and procedures. The procedures should include contingencies in the event that something does not function as anticipated. In some cases, unanticipated events can result in major problems - including destruction of the test hardware and the testing equipment, and even physical injury or death to personnel. It is imperative that the test plan be studied carefully so that the testing personnel are prepared to make split-second decisions as to the required response when something changes or goes wrong. In other cases, methodical following of the test plan prevents problems before they occur.
