This book covers a number of modern, computationally intensive methods in statistics and describes implementations of many of these methods in the "Computational Statistics Toolbox," a MATLAB add-in module available from the authors (at www.infinityassociates.com). This toolbox is not the standard MATLAB Statistics Toolbox (though there is some overlap between the two), and it significantly extends the statistical capabilities of MATLAB in several areas. According to the Preface, the authors had two goals: to promote the use of modern statistical methods among MATLAB users and to promote the use of MATLAB among statisticians. I am a statistician who spends a fair amount of time interacting with engineers, and I have a fair amount of experience with several traditional statistics packages, but very little with MATLAB. As such, I wholeheartedly endorse the first goal and am willing to be persuaded on the second.
