Middlemount coal mine is an opencast metallurgical coal mine located 6 km to the southwest of Middlemount, and started coal production in the middle of 2011. The interest in this cola mine is owned fifty-fifty by Peabody Energy Corporation and Yancoal Australia Pty Ltd. At Middlemount coal mine, the production volume of saleable coal was 2.866 million tons in 2013 and 2.738 million tons in the period from January to September in 2014. The product split from this coal mine is about 70% low-ash semihard coking coal and about 30% LV PCI coal. Metallurgical coal produced at this coal mine is exported from Abbot Point Coal Terminal (APCT) via Northern Missing Link Railway.
