This is an important article that presents an extensive experience treating upper and lower ureteral pathology using the Da Vinci Robot. Traditionally, these surgeries have been performed in an open manner, in which large incisions were required for the surgeon to plainly observe and manipulate the surgical field. These incisions inevitably created significant patient trauma, substantial pain and suffering, extended recovery time, and prolonged pain management. Some centers and surgeons have been capable of performing these operations lapo-roscopically; however this can be challenging because of technical considerations. Robotic assisted laporoscopic surgery (RALS) has enhanced the ability to perform several complex operations including ureteral surgery, partial nephrectomy, and, of course, prostate surgery.
