The easterly wind blows hard off of the Sangre de Crista Mountains and across the plains of southern Colorado. It buffets Las Animas County, a sparsely populated region whose name is derived from the Spanish for "River of the Lost Souls in Purgatory." A century ago, the combined forces of corporate greed and a collaborative government conspired to dispatch the souls of more than 20 women, children and union activists dwelling in a tent colony at a remote place called Ludlow.
