The Queensland Government, in light of environmental concerns such as greenhouse gas emissions, is, in partnership with the mining industry and other stakeholders, working on several appropriate initiatives. The new Co-operative Research Centre for Coal in Sustainable Development, based in Brisbane, is one such initiative. With a budget of 61 million dollars over its seven-year term, the centre's research program will focus on life cycle assessment of the environmental, economic and social aspects of coal use, with the aim of securing a role for coal in future sustainable development.
