Over August gas-fired generation was, on average, 8.08 pounds/MWh more profitable than coal-fired, once carbon is included in the calculation. In a non-carbon constrained world, gas would still be ahead, albeit by a far smaller margin of 1.38 pounds/MWh. The cost of carbon for UK generators currently averages 5.14 pounds/MWh for CCGTs and 11.85 pounds/MWh for coal-fired plant. This is higher than last month, when CCGTs paid 4.91 pounds/MWh and coal-fired plant paid 11.32 pounds/MWh. In addition it is also lower than it was a year ago, when August 2008 recorded average costs of 7.64 pounds/MWh for gas-fired and 17.61 pounds/MWh for coal-fired.
