MINEWORKERS who shifted almost 5,000 tonnes of steel to meet a replacement deadline for the pit's last face are determined to go out riding on the crest of a wave - from a faceline extended to 320 metres that will yield over 450 tonnes a strip. For pitmen at Welbeck Colliery, the timing couldn't have been better. Just as 243s started turning coal, the face it was replacing was on its salvage cuts, says assistant manager Terry Davison, "thanks to commitment, teamwork and hard graft".
