Picking my way through the myriad of e-zines and subscriptions that infest my inbox, three articles caught my eye: an interesting summary of a recent court case involving a prosecution for misleading environmental claims about low carbon coffins, an announcement of a new certification scheme that confirms products have been made with water obtained from sustainable sources, and a news item about how UK MPs are demanding a massive increase in carbon labelling. Gadzooks! Before long consumers will be checking whisky bottles to ensure that the label ticks all the boxes attesting to its low-carbon, additive-free, dolphin-friendly and fair-trade credentials. Where will it all end? One thing for sure is that the current proliferation of ethical and environmental labels will not end accusations of marketing "greenwash". Who, apart from the providers of the audit and assurance services and maybe labelling manufacturers, will benefit?
