In a quest to find best practice, QW's Claire Churchard spoke to Microsoft, Flight Centre and Timpson's (all in the top ten of the Sunday Times '100 best companies' 2003 list) to find out about their company culture. Creating a culture where staff are happy is probably not high on the agenda for many organisations at the moment. But those companies that consider employees an asset, promote a sense of ownership and responsibility and believe in a work/life balance, are consistently coming out on top. There is a definite correlation between a positive company culture and an increase in profits, even in murky economic times.
