Cultivation of intercrops in autumn sugarcane

Since the initial growth of the sugarcane crop is slow, the intercrops can complete their life cycle easily and, at the same time, they have no negative impact on the production of sugarcane.Rice, wheat, maize, cotton and sugarcane are the main crops of Punjab. Usually, sugarcane is cultivated on sandy loam to clay loam soils. Autumn sugarcane can be sown from September 20 to October 20 with the option of cultivating intercrops for a higherprofit. Since the initial growth of the sugarcane crop is slow despite a wider spacing of 90 cm, the intercrops can complete their life cycle easily and, at the same time, they have no negative impact on the production of sugarcane. Moreover, the intercrops suppress the growth of weeds and optimum use of water is also possible. Fertilizers should be applied as per recommendations under intercrops in autumn sugarcane.
