Weeds inflict maximum damage during early stages of crop growth as they are better adopted under technologically improved agriculture than in traditional subsistence agriculture. For obtaining potential yield and harvesting full benefits of costly inputs, it is necessary that weeds are properly managed. AMONG the many difficulties faced by farmers in getting higher production of paddy the most important is lack of proper weed management technology. This crop is found infested with a number of weeds which often cause losses in grain yield ranging from 30 to 50 per cent and sometimes even more. Weeds inflict maximum damage during early stages of crop growth as they are better adopted under technologically improved agriculture than in traditional subsistence agriculture. Introduction of high yielding crop varieties and improved technology like puddling, increase in cropping intensity, higher use of fertilizers and irrigation water etc. have tilted the ecological balance in favour of rice weeds and the problem is becoming complex year after year.
