BUMPER crop can only be harvested by growing recommended varieties, applying nitrogenous fertilizers and irrigations strictly as per recommendations. Each grower, however, should lay emphasis in managing the diseases specific to area. Diagnosis and management of different diseases in wheat and barley are discussed hereunder. These diseases affect leaves and form yellow pustules forming stripes (yellow rust) or, round, orange, brown pustules clusters on leaves (brown root). The disease symptoms are less common on the leaf sheath and stalk. Since the late seventies, Punjab farmers have been sowing improved rust resistant varieties recommended by Punjab Agricultural University and the losses due to rust diseases have been minimal. However, the rust pathogens are very dynamic and new strains appear which can attack the earlier resistant varieties. That's why to maintain and improve the yield of wheat, rust resistant recommended varieties such as PBW 502, PBW 343, WH 542, PDW 291, PDW 274, PDW 233, PBW509, PBW 373, TL 1210, TL2908, PBW 527 AND PBW 175 should be grown under different conditions for which these have been recommended.
