Exports important for Malaysia

Both the broiler and egg sectors depend on exports to sustain profitable domestic prices. Broiler parent stock numbers in Malaysia rose by nearly 3 percent in 2000 to 3.74 million. Regarding sources of supply of day-old female parents, two local grandparent stock companies provided more than two-thirds of all parents last year. The remainder are imported. Last year, there were 25 broiler breeding companies and they produced around 383 million chicks or nearly 6 percent more than the 374m produced in 1999. The top six producers, comprising four integrators and two non-integrated operations, supplied almost 73 percent of the total. The integrators produced just over 63 percent - down two percentage points on the year. For 2001, the forecast stands at just under 400m, representing a 4.2 percent increase. In addition, some 1.4m day-olds were imported from Thailand. Production of 42-day-old broilers in 2000 is put at 364m against 348m in 1999. The leading producers are five integrators and two nonintegrators and account for 75 percent of output. Integrated production represents 61 percent of the total. For 2001, broiler output is expected to reach 377m, a rise of 3.8 percent.
