Japan's industry contracts

Trends evident in Japan for the past decade continued in the year 2000 with a further contraction in both broiler and egg production and in the number of producers. Although the changes in the output and structure of Japan's poultry industry were relatively small in the year 2000 when compared with 1999, the downward trends that have been evident for many years continued. The number of broilers slaughtered fell below 570 million, which was 0.4 percent down on the year-earlier level of 571.5m but almost 140m (20 percent) below the 1990 figure which exceeded 708m birds. However, as the average liveweight/bird has increased in the decade from 2.52kg to 2.73kg, the fall in the total liveweight of broilermeat produced was not quite so severe at 14.4 percent. If the 1.7kg birds that are produced for KFC outlets are excluded from the calculations, then the average weight of the other broilers marketed in 2000 is almost 2.9kg.
